Gadgets Also Eat Energy - VIDEOMonday 2nd July 2012
We have been reviewing some very ingenious gadgets over recent posts, but how about turning the tables on the gadgets, as gadgets are also energy hungry little blighters, eating up electricity all over houses, offices and even in the car.
Make an inventory of the gadgets you have in your house, now you may be surprised how many you have plugged in, or soon will need to be, or left on standby. Not just small, hand held or pocket gadgets, also include the other gadgets such as computers, games consoles and broadband routers - many of which are left on 24 hours.
Thinking about your home - what gadgets have you got plugged in and at least on standby in let's say the kitchen, the kettle with its blue energy saving glow (using electricity no matter what they say), the clock on the microwave and cooker (eats up electricity 24/7), how about the standby on the washing machine, dryer, dishwasher and coffee machine, plus don’t forget the fridge gentle purring away gobbling the kilowatts continuously. That's just the kitchen!
Do you get the point - yes we have looked at gadgets that are energy efficient, or even allow you to use other gadgets using recyclable energy or water power - but consider all your other gadgets thrumming away, it is true to say that if they all made a loud noise we would be rushing around switching them off.
Why not switch them off anyway, because one thing is for certain, we will not be getting less gadgets in the future. They may be greener, use sustainable energy but the bottom-line is they all use energy and we have to pay for it in one way or another, or even several ways!
Here is an interesting BBC News video from a couple of years ago highlighting the problem:
