Money Out of the Drain - Video

Monday 23rd June 2014

As you stand enjoying your shower have a thought for all that hot water running over your body, ingot he shower tray and down the drain - all that hot water, energy and money going to waste. Plus, that waste has an impact on our environment, with estimates that 80% to 90% of energy used to heat water is thus wasted, along with the cost, downy he drain.

What to do, you could have a cold shower, but that does not seem to be a popular choice except for the most hardy. Fortunately you don’t have to go to those low temperatures as Canadian company Ecodrain have designed a heat-exchanger to reclaim some of that heat flowing down the plug hole.

This is not a new concept, but has never been viable on a small scale, but Ecodrain’s solution is designed for residential buildings, with the company claiming a 45% recovery of waste heat from a shower run-off.

The Ecodrain can be installed, retrospectively if need be, horizontally allowing it to be fitted near the waste outlet, where the water is hottest on it’s journey to the sea!

Ecodrain reckon the payback could be as short as two years, which is a plus when the units are expected to last 30 years.
