Network Rail Use Blockchain System to Incentivise Energy Efficiency Actions

Wednesday 21st March 2018

Network Rail, who operate the railway infrastructure in the UK, are looking to incentivise staff and businesses to become more energy efficient and reduce their carbon footprint.

They are trialling Energi Mine’s blockchain based system, working in partnership with the Energy Managers Association (EMA). The trial will provide a financial incentive to staff and businesses by rewarding positive energy efficiency with EnergiTokens (ETK), which are designed to reward energy-saving behaviour.

Business and Network Rail staff will be able to redeem the tokens through a smart device app to pay energy bills, electric vehicle recharging or even exchange them for cash.

Wendi Wheeler, who is both Chair of the EMA and the Energy and Carbon Strategy Manager at Network Rail, stated: “A company’s staff is one of the greatest untapped energy efficiency opportunities...Unlocking that potential to realise energy savings…and sustaining those savings is often something that companies struggle to achieve.”
