Shaded Energy

Thursday 16th May 2013

Although the weather seems to be incredibly unpredictable wherever you are, it is the time when the sun will start to shine, and may even shed some warmth into our back yards - hence the time to roll out the grill, the garden table and put up the umbrella.

Instead of using just a canvas umbrella this year, why not opt for the solar charging umbrella from Hammacher Schlemmer. It looks like most garden parasols, but look closer and you realize it has that bit extra.

There are four solar panels entwined into the fabric of the 9 foot diameter patio umbrella, which converts the sun’s energy into usable energy and pumps it to two USB ports conveniently placed in the shades pole. The energy also charges up a rechargeable 3.7-volt/1000mA backup battery, so it can be used in cloudy conditions

The umbrella may attract the energy from the sun, but it will still protect you - Hammacher claims that it cuts out 98 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays giving it a UPF rating of 50+, the highest attainable.

The canopy is lightweight but made from a strong 8′ L aluminum pole, and is built to withstand wind gusts. Of course the electronic bits and pieces are weatherproof, so it can be left out through the variable summer weather.
