Indian Drive for LED Lighting Uptake

INDIAN Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched an energy efficiency program in an effort to reduce energy demand and reduce the amount of investment in energy generation.

The domestic efficient lighting programme in Delhi aims to distribute LED lighting across the city, while the National Programme for LED-based Home and Street Lighting will further reduce demand.

As an example of the saving the replacement of all bulbs with LEDs in just Delhi’s South Block will deliver savings of 7000 units of energy monthly.

Modi called the spread of LED replacement a people's movement, noting it is more economical to save energy, than to produce it, noting that while one power station can produce large quantities of energy, to save the same amount of energy needs the active participation from many, many people. Hence he called on celebrities and prominent citizens to motivate people to back the new scheme and adopt LED bulb replacement.

This new initiative is part of the Indian government's attempt to spread the message of energy efficiency across the country.
