Is the EU About to Get a 30% Energy Efficiency Target

Jean Claude Juncker, the President elect of the EU Commission, is backing a 30% energy efficiency target for 2030 for the bloc.

During a speech last week to the European Parliament Juncker nailed his colours to the current president Manual Barroso’s proposal of 27-29%, stating: “A binding 30% energy efficiency target is for me the minimum.”

Apart from reducing CO2 emissions and saving money he also feels it is important for the EUs energy security, particularly in reducing reliance on Russian gas supplies.

Today the European Commission is set to accept the Energy Efficiency Communication, which is a deep study of the EU’s progress in its set 2020 energy efficiency target. They will also accept the energy efficiency framework leading up to 2030.
